Flower Towers

If your garden needs some colorful verticality, try planting some towers of flowers, also known as Hollyhocks (Alcea Rosea). These herbaceaous biennials grow in a tall showy stalk with bright pink or reddish flowers all along the way. The like full sun and well-drained soil.

In our backyard in San Diego, we currently have several of these Hollyhock spires in full bloom. The tallest is twelve feet tall with flowers four inches across. The fill the space like sculptured art and create an almost fantastical atmosphere to that area. Can anything really be that tall and beautiful? They inspire thoughts of English gardens from another time.

I recommend growing Hollyhocks from seeds. Once they are established, they will take a year or so to grow as tall as ours. They will spread out and you will soon see new shoots nearby. Yours might not reach to twelve feet but they will likely get to be at least eight feet so be prepared! I am sure you will be glad you added these flower towers to your garden.
