Does stress control you?
Last October, after being retired and basically doing very little for 18 months, I went back to work. My employer asked me to fill in for someone who was on extended medical leave. It was a huge adjustment in my life and routine. It was like sitting on the couch for a month and then suddenly running as fast I could. I was stressed out. There was too much work and too little time. I began to resent my Blackberry buzzing on my hip. During this same period, my wife and I began to have major problems. We talked about getting divorced. As you might guess, this piled on more stress. Much more stress. I had trouble sleeping and was taking aspirin with my morning coffee. I began to think about stress. Obviously stress is caused by events in our lives. We have some control but not over everything. But I started thinking that maybe I was allowing stress to affect me more than it had to. Maybe I could control the stress instead of it controlling me. Just thinking that reduced my stress. If my boss was yelling at me because an assignment was late or my wife was yelling for, well, any number of reasons, I could choose not to be overly stressed by it. I could think, yes, this is unpleasant but it will not last forever. The sun is shining, there are many beautiful wonderful things in the world. Compared to the age of the universe, our lives are just a spark winking in the darkness. Why get so excited? Why not keep external things external and not internalize them? Life is to be enjoyed. Think about stress in your life. Is it controlling you? It does not have to be that way. Put up a filter. Do not let it come in. By the way, I am now working from home and my wife and I are giving it another try. Things happen and then other things happen. Try to be happy and enjoy life. |
