Disruptive Period For Internet
Are you on My Space? How about Face Book? Do you look up information on Wikipedia? If not, you may not be aware that the Internet is entering what the Wall Street Journal called "a highly disruptive period." (From Wikinomics to Government 2.0, 5/12/08). It involves social networks and online tools that allow people to communicate directly with one another. It reverses the top down approach of the past. From now on, every website will have the ability to create communities of users who share information and rate what is valuable and what is not. Think about this in terms of companies selling products. HOw do they gauge what people want? With web 2.0, there would be an exchange of feedback from seller to buyer, buyer to seller, and buyer to buyer. What about your company? How does the boss communicate with the employees? Now think about web 2.0. Your companies website could have an interactive and vibrant discussion about the latest trends and resources for your industry. Does this sound democratic? Now apply web 2.0 to government. There could be specialized sites on specific issues where the citizens can discuss the issue and provide their input and ideas. With all of this interacting and discussing, there needs to be a way to screen out the less useful data and input and highlight the valuable information. The cream will rise to the top and what is most useful and legitimate will be valued. It is a marketplace of ideas just as the economic supply and demand creates value for products and services. Web 2.0 reflects that we live in a world community joined by our common problems and needs. We can no longer isolate ourselves. What happens in China and India affects the rest of the world. What you do affects me. We are connected and need a way to acknowledge that fact. Web 2.0 is the future and the world is better for it. |
