Describe Your Emotional Why

Many people decide to start a home-based business with hopes of building an extra income. They start out motivated but then get discouraged when they do not receive the income they expected. Many times, it was not the fault of the business opportunity. They had neglected the first step necessary to be successful with a home-based business: they had not "described their emotional why."

Working from home with an affiliate program or network marketing opportunity can provide a full time income or even a lifestyle changing income. However, it takes time and persistence. There are bound to be disappointments along the way. When that happens, you need to have something to keep you going. That is where the emotional why comes in. It keeps you motivated and continuing to take the actions necessary to be successful.

To start, give careful thought as to why you decided to work from home. What was in your mind? Early retirement, a new house, freedom from the daily grind? Start to jot down some notes as you think. Try to create a picture in your mind of what your life would be like with signficantly more income.

The next step is to write a detailed, descriptive statement of your emotional why. Put in the feelings behind your thoughts. How would it feel to pay off your bills, to pay for your grandchild's tuition, to take that trip you have always dreamed about? Your statement should be at least one full page--the more detailed, the better.

Next, you should find a visual depiction of your emotional why. Find a picture in a magazine or even a photo you have taken. It should create an emotional response when you see it. The picture represents your dream lifestyle you will have when your business succeeds. Print it out and keep it with your written statement. It is important to keep the picture readily accessible so you look at it frequently. Make a habit of reading your statement regularly, at least once a day.

Without taking this first step to success, you will find it much harder to stay motivated and to reach your goals.
