Auto Club Advice

My phone rang at work and it was my wife reporting that her son's car had been towed. The son, who has been living in China for seven months, had failed to register the car with California DMV. The state tends to frown on that and have the authority to send out tow trucks to patrol for miscreants like us. In order to liberate the car from the tow yard, we needed to register the car on her son's behalf. It was Saturday and I was not happy with this turn of events.

We were faced with one of those problems that neither of us were experienced or knowledgeable about. I would like to share some of our experience in hope you will find it useful some day. It began with an Internet search as is my common first step when I am stymied with a problem. I think that possibly someone else has had this same problem and wrote about it. Or maybe the DMV website can solve everything. I acknowledge a rather overly optimistic and graniose feeling toward the Internet, where all knowledge lies.

Through my search, I discovered that AAA has a registration service. You are not required to endure the DMV ordeal that is the very essence of tedious and annoying. We drove to the local AAA office and talked to a very nice woman who quickly looked up the information on the computer. The car's registration had been suspended for no insurance and no current smog certificate. All we had to do was pay the fees, get the smog test and take that to the tow yard. Then we could drive this problem child home.

As you would expect, it was not that easy. AAA was thrilled to help a member, but the son, living in China without a car, had allowed his membership to expire. Tough luck and have fun at the DMV!

Not to be thwarted on my mission, I went to my backup plan. He needs to be a member so let's make him a member. AAA has a gift program where you can give someone a AAA membership whether they want one or not. You might want to get a sense of that before giving such a gift. We signed him up and his membership was active that same day.The cost was $67 for the basic membership which you can pay with a debit card over the phone.

Feeling smug and confident, we returned to the AAA office, proof of insurance in hand. Please kind AAA agent, register this car and we shall be forever grateful. With the son an active member, the registration service was available to us. However, the agent printed out the DMV report that said in big letters "Suspended." The agent told us we had to call DMV and they would take it from there. AAA was not able to finish the registration that day. We retreated to the car, crestfallen but determined.

So the lesson was that AAA was a great resource for registering your car with DMV, if you are a member. They have Saturday hours and you have virtually no wait. We also learned that AAA could not solve every problem and we are stuck waiting for DMV to open on Monday.
